With smash hits like “Feel Good Inc.” and “Clint Eastwood,” the first couple of Gorillaz records made a major stamp on the early 2000s indie pop music industry. Its hard to find groups with as much potential as Gorillaz these days, and they definitely did not meet expectations with this effort.Gorillaz, the long-running virtual band spearheaded by UK songwriter Damon Albarn, has released one of their most colorful collections of tracks to date with “Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez,” giving them a much-needed cultural and artistic rejuvenation.Įver since Gorillaz’s eponymous 2001 debut, Albarn has carved out a special place for himself in the indie pop landscape, combining elements of rock, hip hop and pop in a way no other group has managed to. but just not as much as I was hoping I would. There are some GREAT tracks, I will admit: Rhinestone Eyes, Superfast Jellyfish, Some Kind of Nature and On Melancholy Hill which may actually be Gorillaz best song to date, in my opinion, but the surroundings are so mundane and uneventful that the album really just comes across as half-baked. If Plastic Beach took the group in a different direction, I wouldnt make that comparison, but unfortunately I dont really see Gorillaz trying anything new here. Demon Days set the bar really high, but I dont see why this album couldnt meet it or exceed it. By the way, anyone else hear 'Intruder' by Van Halen when listening to 'Stylo' from this album?Īfter a very, very good album in 'Demon Days,' a 5-year wait and a slow, epic orchestral introduction to Plastic Beach, we are left with. Maybe Tool, Social Distortion, Boston, System Of A Down, ZZ Top, and Van Halen will make another album before were all too old to care anymore. Maybe Ill get to hear another album from Gorillaz someday many years from now after all our kids have grown up. Maybe the spontaneous and quickly recorded songs of the classic 60s and 70s albums we hold dear is whats missing in todays music. Maybe they just spent too long making it and got burned out. I gotta wonder what these musicians are doing for all these years thats taking so long. Most of the time this doesnt happen for me. I suppose that in this day and age when it takes 5 years or longer for artists we like to make an album, we expect it to be earth shattering, colossal, and well worth the wait.
